Vauxhall to Richmond - May 5th 2022
My Walk
This walk starts at Vauxhall Bridge on the south bank of the river. It passes through Battersea, Wandsworth, Putney, Hammersmith, Barnes, Mortlake and Kew before arriving at Richmond Bridge. Excluding railway bridges, if you include Vauxhall & Richmond, the walk takes in 11 bridges – the highest density of any of the walks. It includes two of the prettiest bridges – Chelsea & Albert and one of the least attractive – Wandsworth. The official distance covered is just over 14 miles.
There is aways something new to see every time I do a Thames Path walk and the highlights in 2022 were Battersea Power Station looking more complete than I’d ever seen it and the brand new Northern Line station named Battersea Power Station. This station is at the end of a new spur from Kennington with Nine Elms as an intermediary station. At Putney the new Riverside Stand at Craven Cottage was really coming on since my last walk in 2021 but it looked like there was still a way to go to completion.
As I walked by Barnes Bridge, I could see some workmen on the other side of the river. I didn’t know at the time but they had just started on the construction of a new footbridge to be called the Dukes Meadows Footbridge. As I now know in January 2023 having walked across it, this is a really imaginative and attractive footbridge that crosses the railway by passing under Barnes Bridge. It cuts out a fairly convoluted walk that previously took walkers away from the river, under a railway arch, then back to the river again. Hounslow Council is to be congratulated on this new bridge.
Arriving at Richmond Bridge at about 16:30, I left the river for the day in search of coffee & cake!
