Wallingford to Abingdon - June 10th 2022
My Walk
This walk starts on the south bank of the river at Wallingford Bridge. From there it makes its way up to Benson Lock where it crosses the lock and the weir. Continuing alongside the river it passes Shillingford Bridge and after a short walk along the main road, it rejoins and carries on to Day’s Lock at Little Wittenham. At Day’s Lock it crosses the lock and weir back to the south bank, continuing to Clifton Hampden Bridge where for the final time it crosses the river to the north bank. Between here and the end of the walk it continues alongside the natural course of the river, Clifton Cut and Culham Cut before finally arriving at Abingdon Bridge. The official distance covered is 13.2 miles.
Once again, I chose a cracking day for my walk. The highlights were seeing the fruits of the Earth Trust’s Living Earth II project between Day’s Lock and Clifton Hampden. When I walked this way in 2021 there was fencing everywhere and many earthmovers. The aim of the project was to create new wetland habitats on the floodplains of the river and encourage huge number insects, amphibians, birds, fish and aquatic plant life. This time, all the fencing etc had gone and the new backwaters had been created. It all looked very positive and impressive.
